The French painter Jacques Majorelle moved to Marrakech and bought land that he began to caress into the Majorelle Gardens that are open to the public today. Since 1980, the garden has been owned by Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé. Laurent was passionate about Morocco. He drew inspiration from the traditional culture and costume of its inhabitants and worked them into his designs. When Laurent died in 2008 his ashes were scattered in the garden.
We visited the mystical garden today. There were several people painting the scene as we walked around and soaked up the atmosphere. No wonder Laurent loved the garden; the sounds and smells overwhelm you with a surreal sense of calm and peace. The garden is a definite must-see in Marrakech if you visit.
